In a follow up to an April hearing, KRMF client Freeman May has been removed from Pennsylvania’s death row. Â Due to Mr. May’s severe mental impairment, the Lebanon County Court of Common Pleas appointed a guardian to represent Mr. May’s interests, and, in a hearing on July 2, 2014, the court accepted the guardian’s decision to enter into an agreement that would result in the imposition of a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Â As noted in local media, Mr. May’s mental status was in “precipitous decline” since 2008 to the point that he is no longer legally competent to proceed. Â Because the law prohibits the death penalty in such cases, the prosecution and defense reached agreement on the resolution of his case.
Mr. May is represented by Jules Epstein and Barbara Zemlock.
